Karen Davila, for her 50th birthday, gives 50 bikes to ‘Donate A Bike, Save A Job’ campaign
For broadcaster Karen Davila who just became a golden girl, celebrating her 50th birthday turned out to be extra meaningful after she participated in Gretchen Ho’s “Donate A Bike, Save A Job” campaign.
Davila shared with fans some of the scenes from her birthday advocacy on her Instagram page today, Nov. 22. She also posted a short video yesterday, Nov. 21.
“Bikes are a life changing gift. Bikes help fathers get to work. Bikes help mothers become entrepreneurs. Bikes keep people safe on the way home,” she stated, as she is seen receiving a birthday cake from Ho and their fellow volunteers. “Simple lang ang criteria for choosing beneficiaries – ‘may trabaho man o wala, responsable na alagaan ang bisikleta.’”
(The criteria is simple for choosing beneficiaries; whether you got a job or not, it’s important to be responsible about taking care of the bike.)
Davila was impressed as to how the process of choosing the bike beneficiaries was made.
“We shared 50 bikes and @gretchenho’s team vetted those deserving. What’s amazing about the process… is the beneficiaries choose the bikes themselves! There were a 100 bikes that day, the other 50 from individual donors,” Davila noted. She observed that the process gives the beneficiaries “a sense of ownership.”
Davila also helped in making the donations extra special by signing the bikes and talking to the beneficiaries.
A day before, Davila already shared on Instagram a short clip of her birthday celebration which took place in Payatas.
“Give a man a bike and you’ve helped him become an entrepreneur, helped him go to work, given him means to earn [and] feed his family [and help] him with his safety,” she said.
Ho meanwhile expressed gratitude for Davila’s donation, as seen on Ho’s Instagram post yesterday, Nov. 21.
“It’s such an honor to spend your 50th with you, @iamkarendavila!! One of my broadcasting inspirations,” Ho said. “And truly, you continue to inspire by choosing to spend your birthday this way… Thank you for spending time with us, and with the people of Payatas!!” JB
